Falltime Eczema Prevention

One of my favourite quotes I learned from my husband is “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound in cure.” He is probably the most proactive person I know and I tend to be more on the reactive side. I have learned from Justin over the years that sometimes, taking a few extra mindful steps can really make any process much, much easier.

Vinnie’s eczema has always challenged me the most during seasonal changes. When the air was less dry, his skin would be more manageable and I would become more relaxed with his eczema care. Before I knew it, he would have a flareup and we would both struggle. Eczema and dry air are terrible for itchiness and watching him scratch while I searched for a solution was the worst. His topical steroid would help to bring down the inflammation but would almost aid in more dryness, more dryness, more itching! Argh!

When I started concocting Vinnie’s cream at home and it began doing wonderful things for his skin I thought he had perhaps outgrown his eczema and didn’t need it anymore but after a few days of colder temperatures and dryer air, his skin told me otherwise and we, yet again were back to square one. I realized that his eczema routine had to always stay the same, whether he had eczema symptoms or not. Eczema prone, sensitive skin is very reactive and needs daily protection. It needs proactive, preventative care.

Here are a few good practices:

  • Moisturize the skin liberally morning and night
  • Moisturize the skin directly after bath while the skin is still damp
  • Encourage drinking plenty of fresh water
  • Run a cool mist humidifier to moisten the air around you
  • Use 100% cotton bedding and blankets

A few things to avoid:

  • Wool or itch inducing fabrics such as fleece
  • Hot bath or shower water
  • Scented seasonal candles

Following a simple, kind eczema routine like ours and starting before eczema symptoms appear can truly make such a difference year round. Taking that little bit of extra time each day is absolutely worth it. Eczema free skin means better sleep and an overall better quality of life for everyone in the family.

If you have any questions along your eczema journey, I am always happy to help! I believe in you, we can do this together.
